How to choose a network filter for your computer

A properly selected power filter can protect a computer — or home appliances in the house — from damage caused by power outages.

How to choose a network filter for the computer: what to look for?

How to choose a network filter for your computer

When choosing a network filter for a computer, you should pay attention to the following characteristics of the device:

  1. Type (surge protector or just an extension cord);

  2. The number of output sockets;

  3. There are separate switches for each outlet;

  4. Compatible with UPS;

  5. The presence of USB connectors;

  6. Maximum current and load power.

Moreover, the latter parameter is of prevailing value when it comes to connecting expensive high-power equipment, such as gaming computers or 4K monitors.

Surge protector or just an extension cord

Surge protector or power strip

Today on the market there are two types of devices that perform, in a very general approximation, the same function of increasing the number of sockets - extension cords and surge protectors.

Extension cords - very simple from the structural point of view of the device. They are simply additional sockets without any additional protection. But the extension cords have a low price. Such devices are suitable for connecting not too powerful and inexpensive equipment, since they do not provide its protection against short circuit.

Network filters inherently - extension cords, which are complemented by a varistor. This functional element is designed to protect connected equipment from power surges, short circuits and other power problems. They are suitable for connecting high-powered, expensive or current-sensitive equipment. An important feature of the varistor is the protection of both the "internal" and "external" circuits. So, a short circuit in the external circuit does not damage the equipment connected to the filter, and vice versa.

It is worth remembering that the varistor is a “disposable” device. After a short circuit or other defect in the circuit that caused it to break, you will need to purchase a new surge protector. But it costs less than a new PC or monitor.

If you plan to use equipment in circuits with regular power surges, even the surge protector will not work. It is necessary to use a stabilizer.

Number of output sockets

number of outlets

This is a subjective rather than objective parameter. However, when choosing a network filter, it is worth starting from the number of devices connected to it.

Three - the minimum number of outlets, which is advisable to use. One of them will be occupied by the system unit, the second - by the monitor, and in the third one you can connect the MFP either a printer, speakers or a router.

If the house uses many devices that require power connections (as in the example above), you should use filters with a large number of sockets - from five to eight.

It is not recommended to connect an extension cord, splitter or tee to the power filter. This leads to a significant increase in the load on the varistor due to the addition of additional resistance to the internal circuit.

Separate switches for each outlet

This parameter determines the usability of the surge protector, especially if it is connected to a stabilizer or an uninterruptible power supply. Separate switches allow you to turn off any particular outlet - while the rest will be supplied with current.

At the same time, network filters with such a function are not very widespread. Therefore, if there is a choice between, for example, maximum power and individual switches, it is definitely worth buying a model with maximum power.

Compatible with UPS

Many UPSs are equipped with a three-pin socket. An additional "pin" is designed to protect the connected equipment power defects that occur when switching the current source.

Similarly, compatible with UPS power filters are equipped with a three-pin plug. They are recommended (but not required) for use with uninterruptible power supplies.

USB connectors

USB connectors are designed to connect and charge various mobile devices - smartphones, tablets, music players, etc. However, their presence or absence does not determine the functionality of the network filter. Just with built-in USB connectors it may be more convenient to charge your smartphone.

When choosing a surge protector with built-in USB, consider the value of the charging current. So, if it is 1 A, it is suitable for all mobile devices. Charging for 2 A is designed for tablets and some modern smartphones, but on older devices it can cause battery damage.

Maximum current and load power

Electrical parameters are very important if you want to purchase a surge protector that will precisely protect the computer and peripheral equipment from breakages in the circuit. And in this case it is necessary to calculate the load that will be connected to it.

The load is calculated by summing the capacities of the connected equipment - the system unit (determined by the power of the power supply), the monitor and other equipment. It is desirable that the surge protector is designed for a little more power than that obtained - then it will be possible to include other devices in it.

The load current (in A) is calculated in the same way.

Manufacturers

Among the manufacturers of network filters can be identified companies Sven, Pilot and ERA. The first produce various computer accessories. Their network filters are low cost and good reliability.

  1. Pilot - one of the most famous manufacturers of network filters. His solutions are the most technologically advanced.

  2. "ERA" produces, perhaps, one of the most reliable network filters.

  3. But solutions from Pilot and ERA are quite expensive.
